How much does it cost?

Engineering costs vary significantly from project to project, depending on the complexity of the structure and the site. Typically, structural engineering costs are 1-5% of the total construction cost. This includes the cost of design, detailing and construction supervision.

Below are indicative costs for common projects we undertake in the Nelson and Tasman region. These prices cover our services up to Building Consent lodgement. Construction phase inspections are charged separately at our standard hourly rates.

  • Initial phone conversation: Free

  • Soil investigations: $1,000 - $2,500

  • House alterations (simple): $4,000 - $6,000

  • House alterations (complex): $10,000 - $16,000

  • New builds (simple): $3,000 - $5,000

  • New builds (complex): $12,000 - $25,000

  • Retaining walls: $2,000 - $5,000

  • Pre-purchase assessments: $2,000 - $4,000

  • Initial Seismic Assessment (ISA): $4,000 - $6,000

  • Detailed Seismic Assessment (DSA): Ask us for an estimate

Charge-out rates

Our charge-out rates (per hour) are as follows:

  • Director (CPEng): $240

  • Senior engineer (CPEng): $230

  • Senior engineer: $220

  • Engineer: $190
